Why Starlink is the best internet option for fulltime RV life and how you can get a free month of service
We started fulltime RV life in 2018, were stationary for the first year and then departed in 2019 with a goal to make our way from Florida to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. We had spent the first year getting our clothing brand business ready to go completely mobile. This meant we would have to have reliable internet everywhere we went. Read on to hear our story and find out why Starlink is the best internet option and how you can get a FREE month of service.
Here is our motorhome in Banff National Park with the Starlink on the back. This was on our drive to Alaska. But don’t worry…we will get to that!
How it started. Our first thought was that we would get a mobile hopspot with a grandfathered ATT unlimited data plan. This worked GREAT at first. Then, as we started making our way up to Maine, we found multiple areas where there just was no cell service. But we continued with this plan as we didn’t really have many other options back in 2019.
We ended up out in Southern California in the Fall of 2020 when our ATT plan just suddenly stops. No warning. No messages. It just simply stopped. We found another hotspot with a grandfathered unlimited data plan and got that. It around this time that I got my insurance license and started doing life insurance policies for people, and we were still running our online clothing brand, so good internet was a MUST. We used this internet for a while and then made out way back to the east coast. Wouldn’t you know, after a few months the exact same thing happened and it just suddenly stopped working.
A friend told us about yet another hotspot service that had been working great for them. We got that one and it actually did work well. We used this service all in the southeast with no issues. Then, we made our way up to Virginia in the Fall of 2022 to see family. As we pulled into the RV park you could see the cell signal drop from 4 bars down to ZERO bars. Almost this entirely park was in a complete deadzone for cell service. I had planned to get lots of work done on the insurance policies while. It was incredibly frustrating as we were supposed to be in this part of Virginia for an entire month.
It was at this time that I saw a friend of mine start posting his Starlink stats. His internet speed was absolutely mind blowing compared to the speed I was getting on my mobile hotspot when it actually worked! But, every time I had tried to look into Starlink it always said it was not available in my area. I mentioned this to my friend and he told me to search for “Starlink for RV“. I had no idea that was even a thing. It was apparently new. With this plan you could pause and unpause service according to your needs and it was not based on one specific location. It sounded PERFECT. At the end of November 2022 we went down to North Florida and I ordered Starlink immediately upon our arrival.
Our new Starlink Dish arrived with about 2 days. Set up was a breeze and took only a few minutes. The speed was staggering. It was obvious immediately that Starlink is the best internet option for RV life. It seemed to be the solution that we had been looking for. We left North Florida to go meet friends in Central Florida, and told them about how well our Starlink was working They tested it out and bought their own as well. While we were there, we all discussed how fun it would be to drive to Alaska. We immediately put that plan into place. For us to make that trip Angela would have to work a travel nurse job out west first before we started our trek up to Alaska. This would be the ultimate test for our Starlink. You can read more about preparing for our trip to Alaska here.
We departed Florida in the middle of February 2023 and started making our way to Temecula, California. For the first time ever, our internet worked perfectly all across the country. We used our Starlink the whole time in Temecula with no issues at all. But we knew the BIGGEST test would be the trip to Alaska.
We left Temecula, California on June 1 to begin our trip to Alaska. After a quick stop in Bakersfield to see friends for a few days we had our first boondocking experience in the middle of nowhere. Normally this would be an area where our cell phone service likely would not work. We set up our Starlink and had perfect internet service out in the middle of nowhere! It was AMAZING. We then turned on “wifi calling” on our cell phones so we also were able to make phone calls. This was HUGE. For the first time ever we had internet and phone service everywhere. This allowed us to not only stay connected to our family and friends but ALSO allowed me to truly work from anywhere. This was an absolute game changer.
Our route through Canada to Alaska would have us deep in the wilderness in the Yukon for a while. Our Starlink let me work online, make calls, and keep in touch with family while boondocking in some of the most beautiful places we have ever seen. This is our motorhome outside of Seward, AK.
As of the time of writing this Starlink has a special signup bonus that will give new subscribers a free month of service if referred by a current user. Please use this link to get signed up! If you have any questions, we are happy to help! Also, you may have noticed that we have our Starlink mounted to a pole on our rig. You can get that exact same pole at this link.
